Transition to Secondary School
At Milefield we work in partnership with the local secondary schools to provide a smooth transition for children's next educational phase.
The following information aims to familiarise pupils and parents/carers with procedures and processes and ease any concerns or worries in relation to transition.
During the spring term, most secondary schools organise transition meetings with the support of Milefield staff.
Named leads for transition, from local secondary schools, will visit Year 6 children on several occasions to share information about their new school. Children will have the opportunity to ask questions about their new secondary school and find out about new routines etc.
Following this a letter is sent to parents/carers requesting consent for their child to visit the secondary school with their class teacher. During this time the children usually participate in a taster session in one of the foundation subjects (Art, Design technology, Sports etc).
Following this, year 6 children then participate in a transition day, usually in July, where they will spend the full day at their new school.
Where appropriate, additional visits for you and your child to visit the school can also be arranged.
If your child is attending a secondary school out of the ‘catchment’ (local) area, school will authorise time for you and your child to attend their open day.
