At Milefield, we pride ourselves on our democratic roles within school. We have a range of roles in which pupils lead and support pupils across school. These include: sports leaders, librarians, reading ambassadors, eco committee, curriculum ambassadors and school parliament. For all these roles, pupils have to apply and state why they think they would be suitable candidates for the role. They are actively involved in developments for whole school including: being part of the interview process for new members of staff; surveying school sports and purchasing new equipment then running sports for all; supporting younger pupils develop their reading ability and leading staff meetings for other schools locally to explain our curriculum approach.
We are extremely proud of the pupil ambassadors across school and look forward to welcoming anyone new to our site with friendly faces and a descriptive tour. See below for further examples of how we have impact across school…
Peer Wellbeing Champions
As part of our continued drive to support all pupils’ and staff wellbeing, our wellbeing working party have designated some pupil roles within school. These pupils meet with our working party regularly to discuss ways we can ensure everyone at Milefield’s wellbeing is paramount importance and that we are doing all we can to ensure everyone feels safe and valued in our team. We are meeting with Compass B 31st January to discuss ways we can do this. Our representatives are:
School Parliament
We are Milefield’s new School Parliament for 2023-24. We look forward to working with school to ensure we recruit the right people, support our staff and pupils with mental health and be a big part of all decisions in school.
We were lucky enough to have a meeting with our local MP, Stephanie Peacock this year and discussed issues facing our pupils and school currently and for the future. Stephanie listened to all pupils’ concerns and enjoyed discussing our positives so far this year too. We asked about a visit to our Houses of Parliament this year as we would really like to see where democracy occurs nationally!
April 2024
We met with our Trust compliance officer Ellie and discussed a range of issues around school and some of the enormous positives taking place. A special thanks to our minute taker and chair – Maks and Lilly.
We met our current Barnsley Mayor last academic year at the Town Hall. We got to ask any questions to her in a council chamber and hold a meeting there. We also visited the halls and toured the building learning all about how she became Mayor and how we could potentially be involved in politics one day.
Our Mayor came to visit our school, completed a tour with 3 Parliament members and also conducted a meeting with our Parliament on Tuesday 10th January. She absolutely loved our school and pupils and managed to even learn about a phoneme in KS1! She is going to help us with our links to youth council and Barnsley libraries too. The pupils on Parliament asked some fantastic questions and enjoyed having our visitor for the morning. Below are some pictures which show the Mayor around school…
If you have any questions about the parliament, do not hesitate to get in contact with Mr McClure.
Sports Leaders
At Milefield, we have sports leaders who lead team games and share skills with a range of pupils. They work alongside Grassroots to develop their skills in all areas and learn how to work with all pupils in a range of sports.
Eco Committee
Mrs Crosby leads to pupil Eco- Committee who are determined to support our school be closer to carbon neutral and recycle as much as possible. So far they have conducted a survey of water around school, the temperature around school and bought us a large paper recycling bin for all classes in school. This is saving alot of paper waste each day. We also go around school turning off lights and projectors/screens to save money.
On Thursday 29th February, our eco committee attended the School’s Climate Conference South Yorkshire, where they were involved in Climate Fresk workshops. Pupils learned about the effects of climate change and created a group action plan to implement in school.
School Ambassadors
In Milefield, we have a range of pupil ambassadors: reading, curriculum and sports. These pupils were all asked to apply for their roles and show why they would be passionate in their drive to support others increase their abilities in this area. The reading ambassadors take year one pupils daily to read and practice speed sounds to help them improve their phonics ability; the curriculum ambassadors take part in judging display competitions for staff each term, hold staff meetings and share information with our local academy committee too; the sports leaders have external training each week to ensure they are delivering the best sports practice to a range of pupils across school each day. They are designated the MUGA space every lunch time to run a range of sports and games.
Curriculum Ambassadors
At Milefield, we have a cross section of pupils who lead on Curriculum across school. We prioritise pupil input and ensure pupils are involved in a range of curriculum aspects. Our pupils are leading on our shared foundation subject displays across school. They have recently led a discussion around Curriculum for parents at an open morning where parents could look through pupil books. They even led a staff meeting for another school from Barnsley. Ask us if you have any questions about our curriculum. Our Curriculum Ambassadors 2023-24:
Maths Ambassadors
Our Maths leader, Mr Fearon, has worked with a range of pupils across school in developing the role of Maths ambassadors. These pupils will eventually run their own Maths club at lunchtimes and be in charge of supporting pupils around school to develop key skills such as times tables and number bond knowledge. He will work with them to ensure the best possible Maths provision is on offer to the pupils of Milefield. Here are our ambassadors:
